What is Libertas Infinitum?
A project to design and build an online roleplaying game, guided by the collective will of a community of gamers. Roughly translated from Latin, the name Libertas Infinitum means Freedom without bounds.
A brief overview of key concepts
- Persistent world. One world inhabited by player characters. Changes to this world remain even when logged off, and major events can permanently alter the world.
- Multiple playable species. The initial design calls for several specific species to be implemented, based on anthropomorphic archetypes. In the future, there should be no reason why any intelligent species cannot be selected for play.
- Classless character development. A player character is defined more by the skills they possess than an arbitrary class title. This is implemented very literally, by allowing class titles based on skills, and not restricting skills by anything other than dependent skills.
- Abstract level system. Characters do not have a direct 'level' that determines access to skills, abilities, spells, etc. A character's Effective Level (EL) for given calculation is derived from their relevant skills.
- Open, in every sense. No character should be restricted from attempting something. Starting characters can try to invoke powerful spells (with great difficulty, and personal risk). Spellcasters can wear armour and wield heavy weapons (and be encumbered by doing so). Heroes can challenge deities for power. Interested players can download the source code to the game, and fix bugs, improve features, add new things, and submit those changes to be distributed to everyone.
- More depth to death than just a die-and-respawn mechanism. Characters should be able to explore the realm beyond death.
- Player-controlled. Ultimately replacing most NPCs with players, as shopkeepers, monarchs, generals, and more.
- Bloodlines, allowing retired characters to pass on traits to a newly created character.
- Created by players who are more interested in playing an awesome game than making a quick buck.
How do I get it?
Currently, there are no downloads available, as the game has not been written.
How much will it cost?
Libertas Infinitum will always be free to download and distribute. A commercial release is planned, with the proceeds funding development and related expenses. This will include a hard copy of the manual, installation media, the game's source code and a suite of development tools.
